When we talk of the needy, many of us think of the former Soviet Union, Bosnia or Israel. But charity starts at home, and unfortunately there are many needy here in our community, and as population gets older their needs too grow bigger.
Holidays can evoke strong emotions in all of us, but for the elderly the joy of the season can often be overwhelmed by the challenges they face.
Statistics show that during the holiday season, the elderly feel more vulnerable, needy and lonely. The memories of years gone, relatives that are no longer living coupled with the hardships and struggles of daily living are major causes of depression. The critical needs of holiday programming that are both meaningful, joyous and socially inclusive are growing as the percentage of our population increases.
